White Bear Lake Window Repair & Replacement Service

White Bear Lake Window Repair & Replacement Service

At Apex Window Werks, we provide expert window repair and historic restoration in White Bear Lake, MN. From the 1880s lake cottages and Victorians near the downtown historic district to the post-war neighbourhoods further back, we repair rather than replace wherever the original window can be saved.

White Bear Lake was a summer resort town long before it was a suburb, and the housing shows it. The older houses carry tall, narrow wood double-hung sashes with original wavy glass and weight-and-cord balances; the post-war side of town has the standard problems of its era. The two need completely different trades, and we do both.

Why Choose Our White Bear Lake Window Repair Services?

  • Period Glass Preserved: We re-glaze around original panes wherever they are intact and replace only what is cracked or missing.
  • Sash Replication: Missing sash members and millwork profiles are replicated to match the original rather than substituted with stock parts.
  • Storm Window Strategy: A restored, weatherstripped sash paired with a well-fitted storm performs comparably to a modern insulated unit.
  • Both Sides of Town: Historic restoration near the lake and conventional seal and hardware work in the post-war neighbourhoods.

The original windows are a large part of what your lake house is worth. Contact Apex Window Werks today for professional window repair in White Bear Lake, MN.

Window Repair, Glass Replacement & Defogging in White Bear Lake, Minnesota

Window Repair, Glass Replacement & Defogging in White Bear Lake, Minnesota

White Bear Lake has a longer history than most of the metro. It was a summer resort town before it was a suburb, and the housing shows it: 1880s–1920s lake cottages and Victorians near the shore and the downtown historic district, then a second layer of 1950s–1970s suburban building further back. The old houses have tall, narrow wood double-hung windows with weights and cords and original glass; the post-war houses have the standard problems of their era. The two need completely different work.

Historic Sash Restoration and Glass Replacement in White Bear Lake

Historic Sash Restoration and Glass Replacement in White Bear Lake

On the older lake houses we work to keep the original windows. Wavy period glass, slim sash profiles and the original opening proportions are part of what those houses are worth, and all of it can be preserved while the window is made to work properly again — freed, re-corded, re-glazed, weatherstripped and paired with a good storm window for winter performance. On the post-war side of town the job is more often a failed insulated unit or a tired patio door. We serve all of 55110.

White Bear Lake has one of the better-preserved stocks of period lake housing in the metro, and its windows are a substantial part of why. Original sash here holds glass that has been in place for a century and cannot be bought back once it is gone, so restoration is the default: the sash comes out, the paint seal is cut, cords are replaced and weights re-balanced, localised decay is spliced, and the glazing putty is renewed around sound original panes before the sash is weatherstripped, refinished and rehung.

The cost comparison surprises people. A replacement window that genuinely matches the original profiles on a period White Bear Lake house is expensive; restoring the existing sash is typically cheaper than that and avoids the questions that arise around designated properties, because the elevation does not change. Storm windows are half the system and are treated as such — wooden storm sash repaired, re-glazed and re-hung, aluminium triple-tracks serviced or replaced so they actually close and seal against the weather coming off the lake.

Wood windows and doors are always on the move in a Minnesota climate, and White Bear Lake homes show it clearly. Humid summers swell the wood, bitter winters shrink and dry it, and that yearly back-and-forth loosens joints, cracks glazing, and lets drafts slip past weatherstripping. Near the downtown district and along Lake Avenue, older homes feel it most. We begin with a free on-site assessment, pinpoint what’s genuinely failing, and repair it rather than steering you toward a full replacement. Throughout Ramsey County, most of our repairs are completed in one appointment, we leave the work area tidy, and we stand behind the repair long after we’ve packed up.

Apex Window Werks also serves nearby Vadnais Heights, Hugo and North Oaks.

Apex experts came by quickly, were professional, and finished the estimate on the spot. The office followed up with me over the next few weeks as I wasn't ready to make a decision. I then affirmed to move ahead, they scheduled within a week. The installation crew was polite, and professional and did great work. The cost was a good value for the work done. I would highly recommend it. I'm delighted to have my two windows fixed. The one I can open again and the other I can see clearly out again.

Apex Window Werks replaced the foggy glass on our kitchen window. They carefully removed the old glass pane and installed a new one, ensuring precise measurements and using silicone to secure it properly. From the first person I spoke to on the phone, to the couple of gentlemen who installed the glass, everyone was easy to talk to and they were all very professional. Highly recommended!

Service technicians were polite and professional. They removed damaged parts of the window, cut new pieces to fit, stained the wood, and installed them nicely. The team cleaned up as if they were never there. I would recommend Apex Windows Werks for your window repair. Friends living near me ordered window repairs based on my recommendation as well.

Had someone come out to look at a few windows I’m having issues with - none of them needed a full frame replacement at the moment but the technician was incredibly kind and informative. The technician determined that replacing the entire window frame was not necessary, which saved me both time and money. I feel confident about caring for my current windows, I know what to look for to let me know replacements are needed, and I will definitely be coming back to Apex when that is the case. Thank you!

I was thrilled that Apex Windows Werks had the right parts, and was able to come right out and repair my window on site. They were very prompt, and they saved me quite a bit of money over the replacement quote I got from another window company that didn’t do repairs.

FAQs about
windows & doors repair

Can my original lake cottage windows be saved?

Usually, yes. Sashes from the 1880s to the 1920s were made from dense old-growth wood and were built to be taken apart and serviced. Unless the joinery has actually come loose or the wood has rotted through, the window can be freed, re-corded, re-glazed and weatherstripped, which is normally cheaper than a replacement and keeps the character of the house.

What about the old wavy glass — do I have to lose it?

No. We re-glaze around existing panes wherever they are intact, and we only replace glass that is cracked or missing. Period glass is one of the details that makes these houses what they are, and it is worth keeping.

Are storm windows still worth having?

On a restored historic window, yes. A well-fitted storm window plus a properly weatherstripped original sash gives you performance in the same range as a modern insulated unit, without cutting an original window out of the house.

Is restoring historic windows more expensive than replacing them?

Usually less, once you compare like with like. A sympathetic replacement matching original profiles on a White Bear Lake period house is expensive; restoring the existing sash is typically cheaper and keeps original glass that cannot be bought back. A cheap stock replacement costs less than either, but it changes how the house reads from the street.

Do you need permission to change windows on an older lake house?

For repair and restoration, no. Replacement is where questions arise if a property sits in or near a designated area, because a changed sightline is visible. Restoring the original sash avoids the issue entirely, which is one practical reason we recommend it here.

What is involved in a full sash restoration?

The sash comes out, the paint seal is cut and the unit stripped back. Broken cords are replaced and the weights re-balanced, localised rot is cut out and spliced, the glazing putty is renewed around sound original glass, then the sash is weatherstripped and refinished before going back in.

Do you handle storm windows as well as the main sashes?

Yes, and on a restored historic window the storm is doing half the work. We repair wood storm sash, re-glaze and re-hang them, and service or replace aluminium triple-tracks so they actually close and seal.

What areas in and around White Bear Lake do you cover for window and door repair?
